Frequently Asked Questions about Vienna - Test Management™ Minimize

Answer: In a word, yes. QABook can launch applications and scripts by using the Application test case type. Create an 'Application' or 'Application with Screens' project and then when creating new test cases select the type of test case that matches the project type. Using the application type test case will allow you to specify the file to be opened. When you set up your Test Run you'll have the option select web browsers, this isn't mandatory and you can leave it. However, make sure you check the tick-box for 'Automatically Launch Applications' so all those you have in your test case will be run for you.

Answer: This error occurs when SQL Server service was not installed properly or the SQLBrowser service is not running. QABook can reconfigure the database connection settings by deleting the config.ini file from "My Documents\NMQA\QABook Files\Configuration\" directory and starting QABook again, the database configuration screen will load automatically allowing you to choose the SQL Server to use. After QABook detects the SQL Servers installed on the local machine, the result should look like: "MachineName\SQLExpress" on the drop down list. If this does not resolve the issue, you can install another named instance of SQL Server by downloading the setup file from . Make sure to uncheck the "Hide advanced configuration options" and when asked for the Instance name, you can type in "QABookInstance".

Answer: This happens for one of the following reasons:
  1. If you installed a previous trial version of QABook and the trial period has expired. If this was the case, please send us an email by using the Contact Us form and we will guide you on how to Activate the product.
  2. Machine specific issue. Please send details of your machine spec with a screen shot to

Answer: SQL Server Express Edition will allow you to store up to 4 gig before asking you to upgrade. You can export your projects to QABook Project Files and clear the DB down if you reach that stage. You can also install QABook on other machines or partitions if you need to.

Answer: QABook Desktop will work on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 & Server 2008. It requires .Net 3.5 and SQL Server Express Edition.

Answer: You can export and share projects, requirements, environments, project team and test cases files with co-workers or other members of the QABook community.

Answer: As a rule of thumb if SQL Server is going to work on your system then QABook should as well. The base requirements for SQL Server are shown below:
  • SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services
  • Pentium III-compatible processor or higher
  • Minimum: 600 MHz
  • Recommended: 1 GHz or higher
  • Minimum: 512 MB
  • Recommended: 1 GB or more
  • Maximum: Operating system maximum

Answer: QABook does not directly integrate with any other Test Management tool. However, if you are working with another Test Management tool or a bug tracking tool and you want to move your data into QABook, or use QABook alongside your existing tools, then you can import Requirements, Test Cases and Defects into QABook quite easily. QABook has a facility to export to and import from Microsoft Excel. As long as your other tools also support import/export to/from Microsoft Excel then you can easily move data between the systems.

Answer: NMQA is over 10 years old and we have worked with all the main test tools on the market (open source and commercial). We have always wanted to develop our own Test Management tool, and in 2008 we had our first working version of ‘QABook – Test Management’, which was aimed at the UAT space. Since then we have improved on the functionality vastly and it is now as functionally rich as the other leading tools on the market, and can be used for any type of testing project. We sold five times more licenses of QABook in the first half of 2010 than we did in the whole of 2009, so it’s really starting to take hold in the marketplace. All of the profits to date have been ploughed back into the business to improve QABook as best we can.

Answer: QABook can support any language. We have limited language packs available at present and are always looking for clients to help us put language packs together. We are willing to offer a discount on licenses of QABook in exchange for language packs. Please email if you are interested in helping us create a language pack for your region.

Answer: The main differences are listed below:
  1. Application Architecture: QABook is provided as a web based and desktop application interface for quality assurance specialists. Quality Centre, for example, is provided as web based only with automation application plug-ins. This greatly reduces the ability for automated defect capture, browser and operating system detection and competent report generation through Microsoft Word. A comparison could be made to synchronised Outlook and Web based email versus Hotmail.
  2. SharePoint Integration: QABook is web enabled via Microsoft SharePoint. This enables a customer to fully leverage SharePoint Technologies and integrate their QA with their Project Collaboration Platforms. By being integrated with SharePoint the QABook Platform is fully extensible. A customer with SharePoint knowledge can extend and customise the platform with their templates (logos, style sheets), customise workflows and centralise their project assets. Although other Test Management tools on the market provide for Requirements, Test Cases, Defects, Test Runs, they do not have document management, forums, shared calendars, task lists and everything else that SharePoint provides.
  3. Easy Test Execution: The QABook desktop application provides a highly intuitive, user friendly test execution environment. This enables professional test teams to create test scripts and cases that can be executed by a non QA professional with little or no learning curve. By leveraging automatic defect capture the user need only state that the test step has passed, failed (unable to execute) or a defect has occurred. Some other web based test runners are limited in their user friendliness and ability to perform automated functions such as reading the operating system that the test is being run on.
  4. Take Projects Offline: A consultant can take their Test Cases with them by exporting them and moving them to a local install.  They can then take their PC offline, execute the tests in isolation and then import the Test Cases and and Defects raised back into your main QABook database.
  5. Pricing: A sinlge license of QABook Desktop is free.  If you upgrade to client server then it carries a very low per license cost, and QABook Enterprise, although more expensive than the other editions of QABook, is still far cheaper than the likes of Quality Centre.
  6. Ease of learning: It takes days not months to become competent with QABook.

Answer: QABook Enterprise fully integrates with Microsoft® Office SharePoint Server 2007 and 2010, and Windows SharePoint Services (WSS)

All support contact details will be provided on purchase.

Answer: QABook Desktop licensing works on a per user basis, not a per PC basis. You may have used an Administrator account on your PC to install the QABook client software and enter the full license key? If this is the case you will only be able to use the fully licensed version of QABook if you log into your PC using that Admin user. If you were to switch to another user on that PC you will still see QABook but QABook will think you are a new user and therefore revert to the 5 day trial license that comes with the software. If this is the case and you need to install software on your PC using an Admin account please make sure you install the QABook software using the Admin account but then switch to the main user account before entering the license key.
